Fiji Travel Information

Fiji Geography

Fiji is an archipelago comprising over 300 islands scattered across the South Pacific Ocean, offering a diverse range of geographical features and experiences. The islands vary from desert isles to lush tropical rainforests, each providing a unique backdrop for visitors. The two largest islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, are characterized by mountainous interiors, rich biodiversity, and extensive coastlines. Viti Levu hosts the bustling capital city of Suva, and along the southern coast is the Coral Coast, known for its stunning coastline and easily accessible reefs from shore. Meanwhile, the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands offer stunning sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a perfect setting for relaxing and water activities. If you are looking for a more remote experience, then head to Taveuni or Qamea Islands to see untouched natural beauty and rainforests. The geographic diversity ensures that each region of Fiji offers a distinctive and memorable stay for all ages and adventurers.

Best Time of Year to Visit Fiji

  • From January to March, Fiji experiences its wet season, characterized by hot and humid weather. Temperatures during this period typically range from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit, with humidity levels often making it feel even warmer. This season also brings a higher likelihood of tropical storms and cyclones, as Fiji lies within the South Pacific cyclone belt. Rainfall is frequent and can be heavy, sometimes leading to flooding in certain areas. Despite the increased chance of storms, the lush landscapes thrive during these months, showcasing the vibrant greenery and rich biodiversity that Fiji is known for. Travelers during this period should be prepared for the changing weather conditions and stay informed about any storm warnings.

  • From April to June, Fiji transitions into its dry season, marking the beginning of the peak Fiji travel season. During these months, the weather becomes noticeably less humid, offering more comfortable conditions for visitors. Temperatures are still warm, typically ranging from the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, but the reduction in humidity makes the heat more pleasant. Rainfall decreases significantly, leading to clearer skies and calmer seas, ideal for outdoor activities such as snorkeling, diving, and exploring the islands' natural beauty. This period is highly favored by travelers as it combines the allure of Fiji's tropical climate with more stable and enjoyable weather, making it perfect for both relaxation and adventure. May marks the beginning of the manta ray season in Fiji, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness and swim with these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

  • From July to September, Fiji continues to enjoy its dry season, with weather conditions that are quite similar to those from April to June, and is a continuation of the Fiji travel season. The temperatures remain warm and pleasant, generally ranging from the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, with low humidity levels contributing to a comfortable and enjoyable climate. The seas are calm, making this period perfect for diving, snorkeling, and sailing. As the dry season progresses, the lush landscapes remain vibrant, and the cooler evenings provide a refreshing contrast to the warm days, making this one of the most popular times for visitors to experience the beauty and charm of Fiji.

  • From October to December, Fiji transitions back into its wet season, with the weather becoming noticeably hotter and more humid. Temperatures start to climb, often reaching the mid-80s Fahrenheit, and the humidity increases, creating a more tropical and lush environment. As the year progresses toward December, the frequency of rainfall also rises, with occasional heavy downpours. December marks the beginning of the cyclone season, bringing a heightened risk of tropical storms and cyclones that can affect travel plans and outdoor activities. Despite the increasing heat and humidity, this period still offers vibrant, green landscapes and warm ocean waters, making it appealing to those who enjoy the tropical climate and can handle the occasional weather disruptions.

Finances

In Fiji, they use the Fijian Dollar which you can exchange at banks, hotels, and international airports or you can withdraw money from ATMs, which are mainly in the main cities and airports.

The easiest way to pay for things is by credit cards like Visa and Mastercard. American Express and Discover are taken in only a handful of establishments. Merchants can impose a credit card surcharge, and some credit cards charge up to 3% for an international charge, so it is worth calling your credit card company to understand additional fees.

Whenever paying via credit card, ALWAYS pay in the local currency to avoid extra transaction fees from the bank.

Tipping in Fiji is not a common practice in everyday life in Fiji. Hotels and restaurants do not add service charges to your bill, and you can choose to tip any service provider if you want. It is common to tip waiters, at a sit-down meal, up to 10% of the bill.

Visas & Insurance

As an American tourist, there are no visa requirements to enter Fiji if you stay 120 days or less. Your passport needs to be valid for 6 months or more from the date that you return.

As of Feb 2023, you are no longer required to get travel insurance for COVID-19; however, we highly recommend getting it for any international vacation. We like to recommend Faye Travel Insurance.

Travel Logistics

Getting Around

In Fiji, you can get around by land, sea, or air depending on where you are going in the islands. For the more adventurous, you can rent a car from the Nadi International Airport; however, most like to have transfers between their destinations to be able to relax.

Please note that the local airline is very strict about the weight of your checked and carry-on luggage. Make sure to purchase not purchase the cheapest seat when flying between the islands, as you will be more likely bummed off the flight if they have weight issues.

Phone Services

The international dial code for Fiji is +679. When calling from outside of Fiji, you will want to dial +679 plus the number of the establishment.

We highly recommend downloading WhatsApp as many suppliers communicate with customers via this app.

Flights

From the US, the main carrier is Fiji Airways which is a partner of the OneWorld Alliance.

A majority of flights will leave in the late evening (after 9 pm) and arrive early morning into Australia. Please note that you cross over the International Date Line, so many times you arrive 2 days later when you fly from the U.S. to Australia and you arrive the same day as you depart when you leave Australia and fly back to the US.

Electrical

When coming from the U.S., you will need an adapter to plug your appliances into the power sockets. You will need plugs that have two flat metal pins that form a “V” shape, and have an electrical current of 220-240 volts, AC 50Hz.
